Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Halimah Yacob each sent a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping yesterday (24 Feb) praising China for its efforts in combating the coronavirus outbreak.

“We have seen how speedily China has mobilised itself to contain the spread, and implemented practical measures to help people affected, both in Wuhan and the rest of China. We applaud China’s firm and decisive response, and are happy to see early indications that it is beginning to bring the outbreak under control,” PM Lee wrote.

“I am confident that with your leadership, and the support of the Chinese people and the international community, China will succeed in this urgent task.”

He went on to tell President Xi that many of the PRCs in Singapore infected with the coronavirus have recovered well in Singapore hospitals.

He said, “We have strengthened our healthcare system, to treat and care for those who have contracted the virus. Many COVID-19 patients, including a significant number of Chinese citizens, have recovered well in our hospitals and been discharged.”

PM Lee also mentioned that Singapore has responded to China’s early request for personal protective equipment, medical supplies and diagnostic test kits to help China combat the virus. Singapore has also raised over S$6 million to give humanitarian assistance to affected communities in China, he said.

Looking ahead, PM Lee mentioned that researchers from Singapore are ready to collaborate with their Chinese counterparts to share expertise and discoveries, and work towards a vaccine and an effective treatment for the coronavirus.

“Singapore and China mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year. Our continued close cooperation in meeting common challenges testifies to our strong and steadfast friendship,” he said.

Halimah praises Chinese President Xi

Meanwhile, President Halimah also sent a letter commending President Xi.

She wrote, “Your Excellency has mounted swift, decisive and comprehensive measures to contain the COVID-19 outbreak and safeguard the health of your people, which is highly commendable. These measures are beginning to yield encouraging and positive outcomes. I am confident that under your able leadership, China will overcome COVID-19 with strength and fortitude.”

She also reiterated that Singapore has been supporting China’s efforts to combat the coronavirus including contributing medical equipment, supplies and diagnostic test kits as well as a humanitarian fund of more than S$6 million to China.

“I hope that our modest contributions have brought some comfort and relief to those affected by the virus,” she said.

“It is to China’s credit that its willingness to work with the international community has allowed us all, including affected countries like Singapore, to develop test kits and come up with appropriate measures to manage the outbreak together.”

“I am confident that with your strong support, our two countries will continue to build on this firm foundation to further deepen and broaden the multifaceted cooperation between our two countries,” she added.

“Please accept my best wishes, and I look forward to meeting you again in Beijing during my State Visit to China this year.”
