On 16 December, veteran architect Professor Tay Kheng Soon spoke at the second instalment of the Progress Singapore Party (PSP)’s Talk Series titled “Politics & Planning – The Future of Singapore”.
During the talk, held at Village Hotel Katong, Prof Tay traced Singapore’s formative politics, going as far back as to the Cold war period in which “independence was predicated on alignment with the consolidating Anglo-American global order while tackling the local Hard Left by the Soft Left” right to the present period.
Prof Tay, an adjunct professor at the School of Architecture of the National University of Singapore also examined how meritocracy in Singapore has evolved into elitism, heightened by formal education that is “confined to skill and competency.” and present possible solutions that Singapore could adopt to face the growing issues by the island state.
About a week after the talk, Mr Tay shared a message he received about his participation at the PSP event, thanking him for the seminar.
The message then goes on to say that while the Professor has continued to assert that he is ‘not party-political’, his participation at a PSP event might appear to people that he is, at least in the eyes of “many PAP-supporters”.
It goes on, “Sad to say many of these people will choose not to hear what you have said, are saying and will say.”
So the author then encouraged Prof Tay to “play his fiddle” at his own territory and ignore unfair remarks and accusations from other platforms as they are not worthy of attention.

Prof Tay is a renowned architect responsible for such structures as the People’s Park Complex, Golden Mile Complex, KK Woman’s and Children hospital and more.
