An officer of the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) has been officially charged with three counts of assaulting a man to extort a confession in a drug case.
The 32-year-old officer, Vengedesh ran Nainar Nagarajan is accused of punching, kicking, and slapping Sivabalan Kanniapan, on three different occasions on 2 January between 5.58am and 9.30am at the CNB office in Woodlands Checkpoint.
According to reports, Mr Vengedesh’s charge sheet says that each assault happened as the officer tried to extort a confession out of Mr Sivabalan that he knew about the first bundle of drugs located in his raincoat bag, that the drugs contained heroin, and that he also knew about a second bundle of drugs in his bag.
CNB said that it had discovered possible serious misconduct by this officer and had referred the matter to the police, adding that the bureau provided full cooperation to the police during the investigations.
Vengedesh was suspended by CNB last Saturday. He has been offered bail at S$15,000 and is due back in court on 1 November.
If convicted of voluntarily causing hurt to extort a confession, Mr Vengedesh could be jailed for up to seven years and fined, or caned.
Speaking to Channel NewsASia, the bureau said “(CNB) does not condone any misconduct by our officers, and takes a serious view of all complaints against our officers.”
