Malaysia terminates search of missing Singaporean Tan Eng Soon

MERSING, MALAYSIA — The search for missing Singaporean kayaker has been terminated by the Malaysian authorities on Sunday night (18 August) after no new signs found following discovery of the body of fellow female kayaker on 14 August.
Mr Tan Eng Soon, 62, disappeared alongside another Singaporean Puah Geo Tin, 57, during a kayaking trip near the shores of Mersing on 8 August.
According to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, the operation was called off around 9pm on Sunday.
“The search and rescue operation was called off because there were no new signs found following the discovery of the female victim on 14 August. Nevertheless, the search operation will commence once again if any new pointers are found,” said Johor Maritime chief Aminuddin Haji Abdul Rashid.
On August 15, their kayak was found at 12.55pm off Kuantan waters.
The body of Ms Puah was found a week ago in the coast of Kemaman, Terengganu. They were believed to be separated from their group in rough sea conditions when they were kayaking near the Endau islands.
The head of maritime added that the 10-day search operation involved 155 people, five aviation assets and 11 maritime assets. It also costed RM431,380 (S$143,130).
