Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global standards development organization, and Enterprise Singapore, the national standards body of Singapore, have recently signed a collaboration and license agreement at the sidelines of the Pacific Area Standards Congress held in Wellington, New Zealand.
The agreement was signed on 9 April 2019 by Ms Sonya Bird (director of international standards at Underwriters Laboratories) and Mr Tak Leong Cheong (director of standards of Enterprise Singapore), with Ms Sauw Kook Choy (director-general of quality and excellence group of Enterprise Singapore) as a witness.
The agreement aims to promote communication between the two organizations and facilitate closer support for the development of timely and impactful standards to industries and regulators.

As the national standards agency in Singapore, Enterprise Singapore facilitates the development, promotion, and review of national standards as well as Singapore’s participation in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Enterprise Singapore also participates actively in regional standards such as the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC) and ASEAN Consultative Committee for Standards and Quality (ACCSQ).
“Underwriters Laboratories is excited to strengthen our relationship with Enterprise Singapore and collaborate on the implementation of effective safety standards in Singapore,” said Phil Piqueira, vice president of global standards for Underwriters Laboratories.
“Being one of the leading national standards bodies and advocates for emerging technologies, I am confident that this strategic tie-up will spearhead the development of more standards to help ensure safe use of new innovation and help the world embrace technological disruption. This partnership allows UL to advance our safety mission journey in new frontiers,” he added.
