For the fourth time running, Celebration in Dance is a collaboration between Singapore Dance Theatre and the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) for a one-night-only performance on 18 August 2019. This production presents a unique and brilliant opportunity for RAD students in Singapore to perform on the prestigious stage at the Esplanade Theatre.
Together with the school performances, Singapore Dance Theatre will also be staging George Balanchine’s Theme and Variations and Nils Christe’s ZIN! to enhance the spectacular night’s performance.
“Celebration in Dance is a unique, one of a kind collaboration developed by the Royal Academy of Dance and Singapore Dance Theatre. It is our hope to bring student dancers closer to professional dance performance through this experience with SDT in a performance celebrating everything that is magical and special in the art of dance and performance. Students devote themselves to the study of ballet to experience the both the process of learning and the rewards of dancing in front of an audience,” said artistic director Janek Schergen.
“It is my desire to create memories for young dancers that will last beyond the moments of preparation and performance and carry over into their future lives. These kinds of things are priceless and have an incomparable value connected to them. Moments like these are what we wish for our children and I welcome you to join us for the experience,” he added.
Theme and Variations
Choreography : George Balanchine © The George Balanchine Trust
Staging : Elyse Borne
Music : Peter Il’yich Tchaikovsky (Suite No 3 in G major, Op. 55 IV)
The legendary George Balanchine’s® Theme and Variations, a company premiere, is a grand masterpiece of ballet. This breathtaking ballet showcases the intensive development of the classic ballet lexicon, featuring a cast of 26 dancers. Performed to Tchaikovsky’s brilliant score, “the moment” for the ballet is found in the grand polonaise which exudes drama and excitement. This ballet is a crowd-pleaser, offering the audience any number of favourite moments, with dazzling choreography, gorgeous music, spectacular costumes and the remarkable culmination of all these elements on stage in performance.
ZIN!
Choreography : Nils Christe
Staging : Annegien Sneep
Music : Serra Pelada by Philip Glass
ZIN! is a company premiere of the work created for Introdans in 1997. Featuring a cast of seven dancers, ZIN! is an upbeat and lively piece that is bubbling with humour. Quirky and playful, ZIN! will most definitely amuse and entertain, tease smiles and laughter from the audience. ZIN! is danced to the music of Serra Pelada from the album Powaqqatsi by Philip Glass.
