The Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office on Robinson Road, Singapore will hold a soft opening this week, says Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The Chief Minister said that the office, strategically in the heart of Singapore, will facilitate the promotion of the state’s agricultural and tourism products.
Local site New Sarawak Tribune quoted the Minister saying at a state-level Gawai Dinner on 16 June, “I believe Sarawakians can produce quality crops to meet the global demand”.
He also emphasised the importance of farmers adopting digital technology and modern farming methods such as fertigation to produce quality crops. Fertigation is the use of irrigation systems to inject fertilizers and other water soluble products into crops.
Highlighting the benefits of modern farming, the Minister recalled a village he village head he visited in Sibut who manages to seel chillies for RM20 per kg thanks to the fertigation technique.
“This is a good example of modern farming… and when we have cumulative production, we can even sell our chilies to Singapore,” he stressed.
He hopes that the modernisation of the state’s agriculture sector will help boost income levels of farmers and in turn, help elevate the state economy.
“The Sarawak government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will also ensure that with the additional revenue from the five percent petroleum sales tax, it will be allocated for the development of basic infrastructure, utilities, and technology infrastructure particularly in the rural areas,” he pointed out.
