Malaysia will peruse Chinese technology giant Huawei’s equipment “as much as possible”, as the company offers “tremendous” advantages “over American technology”, said Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad at the 25th International Conference on The Future of Asia in Tokyo on Thu (30 May).

Bloomberg also reported Dr Mahathir as saying in late April during a visit to Huawei’s Beijing office that “Huawei is very advanced” in the use of artificial intelligence.

“We see there is an opportunity for us, together with Huawei, to improve our capacity in the fields of communication and AI,” he added.

Huawei has been under fire by the Trump-led US administration for allegedly assisting Beijing in espionage as the company faces 24 charges in the US due to alleged violation of economic sanctions by dealing with Iran, in addition to being subject to an executive order banning the use of Huawei tools in US telecommunication networks, government institutions and military bases, SCMP reported.

One of Singapore’s major cell phone carriers M1 Ltd has also expressed its willingness to continue dealing with Huawei despite indicating the possibility of working with alternative providers for 5G infrastructure, according to Bloomberg.
