A photograph featuring Li Huanwu – one of the grandsons of Singapore’s founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew – and his husband Heng Yirui in the company of their respective families at their wedding recently has surfaced online.

The photo, attributed to the couple, was posted on the Dear Straight People and Pink Dot SG Facebook pages on Tue evening (28 May):

The release of the photograph saw an outpouring of congratulatory messages and affirmative comments from netizens in awe of the warmth shown by the families of the two men:

Several netizens expressed their hope for a change in Singapore’s policy towards same-sex unions, in addition to advocating the repeal of Section 377A of the Penal Code, which criminalises sexual relationships between two adult men, despite the law not being actively enforced today:

A couple of netizens questioned the absence of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who is Mr Li’s uncle and Mr Lee Hsien Yang’s elder brother:

Mr Li’s parents Lee Hsien Yang and Lee Suet Fern, as well as his eldest brother Li Shengwu, who are present in the photograph, have been embroiled in legal disputes with the Prime Minister and the Attorney-General’s Chambers, most notably regarding the question of demolishing the late Lee Kuan Yew’s family home at 38 Oxley Road.

Mr Li and Dr Heng wed in Cape Town last Fri (24 May), where same-sex marriages were legalised thirteen years ago in Nov 2006 under South Africa’s Civil Union Act.
