Left to right: Dr James Gomez, Khush Chopra and Brad Bowyer speaking at an event in Hong Lim Park.

Function 8 is holding a discussion, “POFMA: More Harm than Good?” on the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) which was recently passed into law by Parliament. This law has been widely criticised and debated since it was first introduced  in April, with many groups and organisations raising several concerns over provisions in the legislation which gives wide powers to ministers to control online publications and mobile messaging and implementing severe penalties for non-compliance of ministerial directives.

Some concerns that the discussion seeks to address include whether fake news laws are intended to curb fake news or are they a means of controlling free speech; how other countries tackle fake news; and whether other ASEAN governments will follow Singapore’s lead.

Guest speakers include Dr James Gomez, Director of Asia Centre; Khush Chopra, a non-practising Singapore lawyer and advocate for constructive change, and Brad Bowyer, a media professional and political activist.
