Nearly a 20 per cent decrease in the crime rate in Johor Bahru has been observed in the first half of this year, according to Johor deputy police chief Mohd Kamarudin Md Din.
Bernama reported Mr Kamarudin as saying on Sun (12 May) that 761 crime cases were recorded between 1 Jan to 7 May this year, in contrast to 924 cases during the same period last year.
The reduction in the JB crime rate, according to Mr Kamarudin, can be linked to “Operasi Khas Pemutihan”, a special operation aimed at eradicating crimes such as drug addiction and snatch thefts, in preparation for Visit Johor Year 2020.
The tourism campaign aims to reel in around 30mil visitors to Malaysia via Johor, and to subsequently collect around RM100bil (S$32.8 billion) in tourist receipts.
