Following several viral videos depicting water leaks at the brand-new Jewel at Changi Airport last Sat (13 Apr), a spokesperson for the airport has clarified that the leaks sprung from a “sprinkler issue”.
In a statement the following day, the spokesperson said: “There was a sprinkler issue in Jewel yesterday afternoon which caused water leakage in the Terminal 1 Arrival Hall”.
However, she added that the sprinkler issue was “quickly attended to and resolved with minimal impact to operations”, according to CNA‘s report.

A few netizens who had commented on one of the viral videos took the opportunity to draw parallels between the water leakage at Jewel and that at the Esplanade Mall when it first opened in 2002:
The water leakage took place amid much fanfare on the third day of Jewel’s public preview.
Jewel – the brainchild of renowned international architect Moshe Safdie and a globally-sourced team from the “engineering, landscape architecture, water feature design, interior design, and art” industries – features the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, known as the “HSBC Rain Vortex”.
The mixed-use development is slated to open its doors to the public on Wed (17 Apr).
