Leong Sze Hian has officially marked his entry into the Singapore political scene as People’s Voice Party (PVP) appoints the financial advisor and veteran blogger as its Shadow Finance Minister.

Founder and leader of PVP Lim Tean made the announcement on behalf of the Party in a Facebook post on Thu (28 Mar).

Mr Lim, who represents Mr Leong in the high-profile legal battle concerning a defamation suit filed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong last year, wrote: “Leong Sze Hian, a veteran of the Finance and Insurance industries is Peoples Voice’s Shadow Finance Minister!”

“We are delighted with Sze Hian’s entry into politics and believe that he will make significant contributions to Singapore in the years to come,” he added.

Highlighting Mr Leong’s record in civil society activism prior to joining politics, Mr Lim wrote that the former “has written over 2000 articles criticising opaque government economic policies and statistics”, particularly “issues of CPF and the labour market”, in line with his background in finance.

Mr Leong has also demonstrated his ability to utilise his financial expertise for the benefit of the people by spending “the last 2 decades providing financial counselling to various organisations and helping thousands of Singaporeans get back up on their feet again after they had fallen by the wayside financially”, according to Mr Lim.

“He is also a well known human rights defender and was recently recognised for his work in this area by a major international organisation”, added the lawyer, noting that Mr Leong has formerly held a position in Maruah, a homegrown human rights organisation, as President.

Touching on PVP’s vision in general, Mr Lim wrote: “Peoples Voice is the fastest growing political party in Singapore and we are attracting so many outstanding MP candidates from all walks of life . They come from the Creative industries, Finance and Securities, education etc.

“Our candidates never live in ivory towers. They live and work amongst ordinary Singaporeans, and are never dependent on the government for an iron rice bowl.

“We look forward to introducing them to you in the coming months,” he said.

Former PAP campaigner Brad Bowyer announces departure from PVP

Separately, former avid People’s Action Party (PAP) campaigner and Briton-turned-Singaporean Brad Bowyer announced his departure from PVP via Facebook on Thu.

“Since Sunday 24th March, I no longer have any direct association with Peoples Voice,” he wrote.

“It has been an interesting 2-year experience as I contributed to Lim Tean and team where I could as he developed his party.

“I wish Lim Tean and his team all the best as they go about serving Singapore in the way they feel is right and thank them for the friendship and experiences I was afforded during our journey together,” added Mr Bowyer.

Commenting on his next move in politics after leaving PVP, he wrote: “I do not yet know exactly where this may be, but while it is emerging, I will continue to research and write my commentary on this Facebook Page, put out my weekly Brads Bites Podcast and support alternative views where I can until the new path is before me.

“I look forward to receiving good council from all those concerned as to what that new route may entail and the choices I should finally make.

“At the end of the day we cannot always choose how we are called to serve but must accept the role that fate and the majority have dealt us to play and I feel in my heart my role now lies elsewhere,” he said.
