Singaporean stand-up comedian and television personality Fakkah Fuzz went the extra mile to personally deliver N95 face masks to victims of toxic chemical pollution in Pasir Gudang.
Posting this on his Facebook page on Thursday (14 March), he said that he had “safely reached Pasir Gudang yesterday to deliver the masks!” He also assured everyone that more help is under way, and that they’re gathering resources to see how they can help to make the situation better.
Fakkah also said that the children are being treated for Methane poisoning and he delivered N95 masks to them although they required R95 masks, because he could only get his hands on them.
On March 7, it was reported that Pasir Gudang in Johor, Malaysia has been the site of an illegal chemical dump that saw hundreds of residents suffering from difficulties in breathing, nausea and vomiting. Tonnes of chemicals were dumped into the nearby Sungai Kim Kim (Kim Kim River) by illegal factory operators about a week ago, sending hazardous fumes into a large area surrounding the site.
According to Malaysia’s Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin, the sample taken from the river identified the chemical compounds as methane, hydrogen chloride, acrylonitrile, acrolein, benzene, toluene, xylene and limonene.
As of Wednesday (13 March), 506 people have sought treatment including 166 being hospitalised while nine were placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to the exposure to the toxic fumes. All 111 schools in Pasir Gudang have been ordered to close with immediate effect from Wednesday until further notice.
So far the suspect has yet to be charged as prosecutors are seeking more information on the case.
