It was reported in the media on Sunday (10 Mar) that a ComfortDelGro cabby drove along the ECP expressway until he fainted while the taxi was still moving. The incident actually happened on Friday (8 Mar).
The whole incident was captured by a dashboard camera from another car. It was later uploaded onto Roads.sg:
It showed the taxi suddenly swerving across two lanes and hitting the wall divider twice before slowing down on ECP. Other vehicles were also seen slowing down, trying to avoid the troubled taxi.
While the taxi slowed, the passenger in the taxi took the opportunity to quickly get out. A red car behind the taxi also slowed and stopped to find out what had happened from the passenger. After some conversation with the passenger, the driver of the red car helped to pick him up as it was dangerous for him to be in the middle of the expressway.
Somehow, the taxi recovered and later moved off, disappearing from sight in the video.
ComfortDelGro apologises and sends hamper and vouchers to passenger
Because the video has been uploaded online, ComfortDelGro was forced to respond. It issued an official apology to the public.
In a statement today (10 Mar), ComfortDelGro confirmed the incident, which occurred at about 1.30pm on 8 Mar.
“Our taxi driver was travelling with a passenger on the ECP expressway when he blacked out momentarily,” said ComfortDelGro.
“When he came to, he realised that his passenger had disembarked. He wanted to get off the expressway to seek medical help and continued driving slowly until he was out of the expressway and at the Rochor Road exit gantry,” added ComfortDelGro.
The driver then called the company for assistance. He has been warded in hospital for observation.
As a gesture of goodwill, ComfortDelGro said it would be sending a hamper and vouchers to the affected passenger.
“We would also like to apologise to all affected motorists for this incident and thank the private (red) car lady driver for her kind assistance,” said ComfortDelGro.
Police confirmed a report had been made and that they were investigating the incident.
It’s not known how old the taxi driver was and why he fainted.
