On Monday night (18 February), People’s Action Party (PAP) Member of Parliament (MP) Yee Chia Hsing halted his Meet-the-People session at Jurong West and rushed to help an elderly woman who was knocked down by a car.

The 69-year-old woman, who owns a shop in the vicinity, had been hit by a car along Jurong West Street 91 towards Pioneer Road North.

A picture of the MP assisting the victim was uploaded online by a member of the citizen journalism website Stomp named Kennedy. He was at the meeting seeking advice from Mr Yee when the incident occurred.

“During my consultancy session, a member of public rushed in and shouted that an old lady had been knocked down by a car and was bleeding profusely outside his office at Block 953 Jurong West Street 91,” explained Kennedy.

As such, Mr Yee abruptly stopped the session and rushed to the scene to provide his help.

“He requested a member of public call an ambulance while he got items from his office for the victim to rest and a towel to allow the woman’s husband to protect her while waiting for the ambulance,” added the Stomper.

Kennedy was touched by Mr Yee’s actions and applauded him for his swift move and how he handled the whole situation.

“It showed how Mr Yee cares for the residents of the area and his heartfelt action during that moment was an inspiration for us all,” he added.

The elderly woman was conscious when she was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, but her condition is not known so far. Police investigations are ongoing.

This is not the first time an MP was seen helping a citizen during an emergency case. In September 2015 during the General Election, Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Koh Poh Koon was reported to have performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a man who collapsed at a food centre in Ang Mo Kio.

The politician and colorectal surgeon began pumping the unconscious man’s chest for 10 minutes before the paramedics came and took over the procedure.

Unfortunately, the man in his 70s died at the A&E department that day.

After Mr Yee’s story was uploaded on Stomp’s Facebook page, over 50 comments were received and most netizens were not impressed with his good move and called it an “election drama”.

However, a few of them commended him for his good and quick action to help the woman.
