The Necessary Stage’s Theatre For Seniors (TFS) has established itself as a professional theatre group with skilled senior actors in Singapore. For its 10th year anniversary, TFS is presenting a production jointly devised and performed by seniors called It Takes All Kinds.

One of the hallmarks of TFS since its establishment in 2008 was the well-loved Encore series of short skis. Following a similar methodology, TFS presents It Takes All Kinds, developed in collaboration with Setagaya Public Theatre from Tokyo over a series of devising sessions.

Alvin Tan, Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage and Founder of TFS shares, “Theatre is contagious, and it brings people together in the process of creating a show. The seniors are immersed in a creation process where they have become coauthors of the work from beginning to the end.”

Director Serena Ho echoes this sentiment as the seniors have brought their rich life experiences into the rehearsal space, to weave together stories that delve into what makes a successful family. Serena finds that it is amazing for the seniors have stayed on to create theatre together and forged strong friendships. “The discovery never stops for me. As people, how different are we? And through working with them, we’ve learnt that we are not so different after all,” says Serena.
