It is said that Dr Mahathir Mohamad lives up to the idiom that a leopard never changes its spots but he’s in good company because the exact same thing can be said of the People’s Action Party so in the end it does not matter whether it’s 3G or 4G leadership, whether it’s Heng Swee Keat or Chan Chun Sing for Prime Minister because it’s still ownself check ownself, then ownself clear ownself, the opposition still gets “fixed” and critics like Thum Ping Tjin, Terry Xu and Leong Sze Hian get condemned, charged and sued respectively which only serves to remind us that post-LKY nothing has changed, for in Parliament Sylvia Lim got hounded mercilessly and was branded “not honourable” for suggesting that the government floated “test balloons” on the GST hike when in fact labour movement NTUC did indeed float “test balloons” through a survey to gather feedback on taxes, but the most spectacular own goal of the year was scored by Goh Chok Tong who ignited public outcry and debate about the obscene pay of crazy rich politicians, rubbing salt on the wounds of Singaporeans reeling from rising cost of living and the horror that their HDB flats could dwindle down to zero value because this was the year the HDB story came undone only for the government to buy time with a desperate last-gasp promise to revive the value of old flats in 20 years’ time, and distract by drumming up national pride about the hosting of a Trump-Kim summit that promised the skies but delivered nothing except for handshakes and cringeworthy selfies for ministers with dictator Kim, while a massive wake-up call came in the form of the SingHealth cyber attack that targeted the Prime Minister but the blockbuster of the year has got to be the Malaysian tsunami and astonishing comeback of Mahathir which sent shockwaves to the Singapore leadership and the man in the street, upended the Loong-Najib bromance and renewed old tensions and hostilities leading up to Malaysian vessels being encamped on Singapore waters as we usher in the new year and that just about sums up 2018 through the lens of a Singaporean in one 365-word sentence.
