28-year-old Kamelia Binte Mohd Amir was fined $2,000 in court on Wednesday (14 November) for pet abandonment.

The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) said that it was alerted to a case of four cats found abandoned in a cardboard box at the lift lobby of Blk 626 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 on 29 October 2017.

Following its investigations, AVA said that Kamelia, who was identified as the owner of the cats admitted to abandoning the cats at the lift lobby.

The four cats are currently under foster care.

AVA stressed that it takes a stern view on pet abandonment, saying, “We investigate all feedback on pet abandonment and will take enforcement action, where necessary.”

Individuals who abandon their pets are liable to a maximum fine of $10,000 and/or a maximum jail term of 12 months for first convictions.

AVA then said that safeguarding animal welfare is a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of all stakeholders, including the public.

While AVA continues to ensure that the necessary enforcement action is taken and to raise awareness on animal welfare, it noted that members of the public can play their part by being vigilant.

The public should promptly report cases of animal welfare issues to AVA via our 24-hour hotline, 1800-476-1600, or via AVA website. Providing photographic and/or videographic evidence will help in its investigations. All information shared with AVA will be held in the strictest confidence.
