Dr Tan Cheng Bock, former PAP Member of Parliament and Presidential Candidate in GE2011, posted on his Facebook page this afternoon that he had breakfast with Mr Lee Hsien Yang at West Coast Food Centre on Sunday morning. Mr Lee is the son of late Lee Kuan Yew and younger brother to the current Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong.
Sharing photos of their breakfast meet up, Dr Tan wrote,
This morning I had breakfast with Lee Hsien Yang. We wanted to catch up with each other as we have not met for quite a while. Instead of some fancy restaurant, I suggested we go to West Coast Food Centre at Block 726 Clementi West. Hsien Yang was all for it. He missed our local hawker fare in the heartlands. We had porridge & coffee with yu tiao. It was a good breakfast, not only the food, but the sharing we had on world affairs and the current state of politics in Singapore.
As it was a Sunday morning, the place was crowded with families out for their Sunday breakfast fix. Many greeted us warmly and some whipped out their handphones to take photos with us. We were touched by their warmth and encouragement. I will be having more breakfasts & lunches with friends regularly in the heartlands.
Dr Tan was accompanied with his team who had helped out in his bid for Presidential Election before he was disqualified by the amendments to the Election Department, and also Dr Ting Choon Meng also can be seen in some of the photo shots. According to sources, Dr Tan has expressed interest in participating in the upcoming General Election. He has also turned up at an event held by the Singapore Democratic Party this year to talk about a possible coalition.
Mr Lee had earlier stepped down as chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) in June this year and been living in Hong Kong with his wife, Lee Suet Fern since last year.
In an interview with TodayOnline last year, Mr Lee said that he has no desire to leave this country. but is being forced to leave. He said, “I have lived here my whole life, I love Singapore and it is my country. Why would I want to move if I did not feel persecuted?”
In June 2017, Mr Lee and his sister, Dr Lee Weiling, issued a public statement to express their non-confidence in their elder brother, stating that they are worried about Singapore’s future in his hands. They accused him of misusing of his position and influence over the Singapore government to drive his personal agenda on the fate of the 38 Oxley property which LKY wanted it demolished after his passing or when Dr Lee is no longer staying in the property.
Following the statement, a Parliament session on convened by the PM to address the allegations by his siblings. However, no investigation was conducted and PM Lee simply dismissed the claims by his words alone. PAP ministers also went on the attack at the two, publicly questioning their character and motives.
In the last statement issued by the two on the Oxley Saga, they wrote, “In public, he (Lee Hsien Loong) presents himself as an honourable son, seeking harmony in the family. In private, he uses his official powers and his subordinates to undermine Lee Kuan Yew’s wishes and attack those who speak up.”
