In a Facebook post on Tuesday (9 October), Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) shared a case where a 56-years-old male Malaysian work permit holder was found to smuggle 6 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes.
It stated that the man was compounded $1,800 for committing the customs offence.
ICA then said that its officer at Woodlands checkpoint detected anomalies in the scanned image of a baggage while conducting checks on Sunday.
True to his suspicion, a total of 6 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes were found hidden in a blanket, shirts and a bag compartment belonging to a 56-year-old male Malaysian work permit holder.
According to the authority, this method of concealment is a cause for concern as similar methods may be used by people with malicious intent to smuggle security items into Singapore.
The authority also posted pictures several packets of cigarettes taped to a blanket and the underside of a polo shirt.
