Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was arrested today (19 Sep) over a 1MDB-related scandal, one of which involves the siphoning of RM2.6bil from the state fund into his personal bank account.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) announced that it has made the arrest at its headquarters in the adminstrative capital of Putrajaya at 4.13 pm.

The commission added that Najib will be detained overnight before being charged for abuse of power under s.23(1) of the MACC Act.

The MACC will also be collaborating with the police to take Najib’s statement for the purpose of assisting the police force’s concurrent investigations in relation to the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA).

Najib will be charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court at 3pm tomorrow (20 Sep).
