Singapore government advised Singaporeans to defer non-essential travel to Osaka during the period of Typhoon 21 “Jebi”.

Jebi, Japan’s most powerful storm in 25 years, has caused a major international airport in western Japan to be closed with thousands of people evacuated. The incident has killed at least 10 people.

All flights have been cancelled since 5 September and there is still no confirmation of when the airport will reopen. Around 3,000 passengers were stranded overnight. Some of them had to stay in the airport for more than 18 hours without power, before ferries and speedboats were deployed to evacuate them on Wednesday.

In the affected area, some 400,000 households are said to be still without power. About 1.2 million people had been advised to leave evacuated areas as the storm approached and local media say some 16,000 took to designated shelters overnight.

Singapore Government extends heartfelt condolences to Japan and the families of the casualties affected by Typhoon 21 “Jebi”.

The government then advised Singaporeans in the affected areas to remain calm, take all necessary precautions for their personal safety, monitor the local news closely and heed the instructions of the local authorities.

“Singaporeans whose flights have been affected should also check with your airlines or tour operators for up-to-date flight schedules, and may wish to consider alternative transport arrangements, including flights out of nearby airports such as the Kobe Airport. Singaporean travellers should also stay in touch with family and friends so that they know you are safe,” it added.

Singaporean travellers can also refer to Travel Advisory for Osaka, Japan on the MFA website Those who require consular assistance may contact Singapore’s Embassy in Tokyo at +81-90-32084122 or the 24-hour MFA Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/8855.”
