An in-principle approval has been granted by the Malaysian Cabinet regarding the Johor-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) project, according to the country’s Transport Minister, Mr Anthony Loke.
Mr Loke said yesterday on 30 July that a joint operating company between Malaysia and Singapore will be established once a full approval is granted, according to Malay Mail Online.
Spanning 4 kilometres between Bukit Chagar Station in Johor Bahru (JB) and Woodlands North, the RTS was slated to be fully operative by 2024, and is estimated to have a capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour in a one-way trip between JB and Singapore.
“Despite the delay, the RTS project will be completed in six years’ time by 2024,” said Mr Loke, according to Malay Mail Online.
The Minister said that the delay was caused by the transition in governance after the Malaysian General Election, which took place on 9 May.
Touching on compensation, Mr Loke added that the matter has yet to be discussed as the joint venture company has yet to be established.
Earlier this month, Singapore Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan said that a joint venture company between Singapore’s SMRT and Malaysia’s Prasarana was meant to be set up by the end of last month.
