Guide Dogs Singapore Ltd (GDS) will be holding its first ever White Cane Community Day event to be held in Westgate on Saturday, 30 September 2017. Supported by Westgate and NHG Eye Institute at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The White Cane Community Day seeks to promote a deeper understanding of the visually impaired (VI) community and to raise awareness for the use of guide dogs in
Singapore. GDS, formerly known as Guide Dogs Association of the Blind Ltd (GDAB), will announce the official launch of their new brand at the event’s opening ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the organisation’s evolution from a guide dogs training provider into a full- fledged service provider for the VI community in Singapore.

The opening ceremony will be graced by Dr Lam Pin Min, Senior Minister of State for Ministry of Health and Ministry of Transport.

Guide Dogs Singapore Ltd (GDS) is a non-profit voluntary welfare organisation formed in 2006 and an associate member with the National Council of Social Service (NCSS), focusing on enhancing the quality of life for the blind and visually impaired people in Singapore through the provision of training and rehabilitation programmes such as Orientation & Mobility (O&M) and Guide Dogs Programme.

White Cane Community Day is free and open to the public. Visitors can participate in a series of experiential activities such as the blindfold walks, Orientation & Mobility (O&M) obstacle course and ‘Activities of Daily Living’ (ADL) simulation. Other highlights include meet and greet with guide dog teams and talks by eye care professionals. Participants stand a chance to receive goodie bags and win prizes in the lucky draws and fun fact quizzes throughout the event.
