2,250 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes seized at Woodlands Checkpoint, total evaded tax valued at S$187,540

2,250 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) at Woodlands Checkpoint on 26 May 2017.
At about 11pm on Friday last week, ICA officers directed an arriving Malaysia-registered empty tanker truck, driven by a lone 36-year-old Malaysian man, for further checks at the Woodlands Checkpoint.
Through the inspection, ICA officers found 2,250 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes concealed in a modified compartment of the tanker.

The driver, duty-unpaid cigarettes and the truck were then handed over to Singapore Customs for investigations. The vehicle used in the commission of such offences is liable to be forfeited.
The total duty and Goods and Services Tax evaded amounted to about S$174,600 and S$12,940 respectively, ICA said.

On the same Friday, at about 12am, ICA had also seized 5,000 cartons of cigarettes which amounted to a total of S$454,070 in evaded tax.
