Early on Tuesday (23 May), Operationally Ready National Servicemen (ORNSMen) from 12 Public Shelter and Resilience Unit of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) participated in a shelter exercise at Little India MRT station as part of their annual In-Camp Training.
The exercise is aimed to enhance the operational proficiency of these ORNSmen in manning the shelter, SCDF said on its Facebook post early this morning.
Public shelters are incorporated in underground MRT stations to provide protection for the public in times of emergency. Such MRT stations come with the yellow triangle Civil Defence Shelter sign (feature photo) .
2nd Minister for Home Affairs and National Development, Mr Desmond Lee, and Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Health, Mr Amrin Amin, observed the exercise at the train station.
MRT shelters are designed with facilities to ensure the shelter environment is safe for those seeking protection. These facilities include protective blast doors, decontamination facilities, ventilation system, power and water supply systems, and dry toilet system.
In Dec 2015 SCDF also had held a Shelter Open House at three stations of the Downtown Line – Bukit Panjang, Beauty World and Tan Kah Kee, where members of the public could see the features of public shelters at the selected MRT stations.
More information about different types of Civil Defence shelters, can be found in the CD Emergency Handbook (page 64-68) posted on SCDF’s website.
