Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) arrested twelve male Indonesians, aged between 18 and 41, for immigration offences and peddling of duty-unpaid cigarettes in a joint operation.
The joint enforcement operation, which took place on 4 May, and in the vicinity of Yew Tee Industrial Estate, involved officers from ICA, Singapore Police Force and Singapore Customs.
A total of 62 cartons and 255 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized during the operation.
ICA noted that the potential duty and Goods and Services Tax involved amounted to about $9,520 and $690 respectively.
Investigations are ongoing.
ICA stressed that it takes a serious view of attempts to overstay, enter or depart Singapore illegally.
Under the Immigration Act (Cap 133), the penalties for overstaying or illegal entry are a jail term of up to six months plus a minimum of three strokes of the cane, while the penalties for illegal departure is a fine of up to $2,000, or a jail term of up to six months, or both.
