Five metal beams, about 6 metres long each, nearly hit pedestrians and vehicles as they fell from a tower crane onto Balestier Road on Wednesday (5 April).
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) stated that they slipped from the lifting gear of a crane and fell at the work site for condominium Viio@Balestier.
No injuries were reported.
According to Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao, four of the beams fell more than ten storeys, one of which fell into a drain near a pedestrian walkway, right behind a man and a woman.
An eyewitness told Lianhe Wanbao that the pedestrians were so shocked that they stood still for some moments.
The man added that four beams fell about 10m in front of a traffic light, where vehicles were starting to move as the light turned green, noting that a bus was nearly hit.
The beams blocked two road lanes, causing a few holes in the road and damaging a metal barrier by the drain.
They were later moved away by workers from the construction site.
A spokesman for project contractor Techkon Commercial told The Straits Times that investigations into the matter are ongoing, saying that the initial conclusion is that it was an unexpected accident.
“However, we are proposing to review the hoisting procedure to prevent similar incidents from happening,” he said.
According to MOM, Techkon has been instructed to stop all lifting operations.
The latest of such an incident took place at Indus Road when two metal bars, about 3 metres long, fell from a Housing & Development Board (HDB) at block 77 on 1 April onto a roof of a pavilion on the ground floor while the other one fell onto the pavement.
