Singaporean comedian Najip Ali might to be taken out as judge from a popular Malaysian TV show, Maharaja Lawak Mega 2017 as a result of his offensive remarks against Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Mediacorp Channel 5’s live comedy show OK Chope!, as reported by Utusan Online.
The Maharaja Lawak Mega ia a reality competition for comedians. It is aired by cable TV channel Astro Warna, who declined to confirm the news. It also airs in Singapore on cable TV channel Astro Warna (StarHub TV Channel 118) on Fridays at 10 pm.
Mr Raqim Ahmad, Astro’s head of Malay entertainment told The Straits Times that Astro has declined to comment on the issue. However, he advised media to attend the Maharaja Lawak Mega show on Friday to find out more.
On the segment, the panel was asked to fill in words to form the sentence: Najib slams ___ for threatening Malaysia’s progress.
MediaCorp has offered its apology through its website.
Mr Najip also offered his apology by saying, “Over the last few days I have reflected on the comments I made during a segment on a Channel 5 comedy show which referenced Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. I realise how insensitive and callous I was. I would like to apologise unreservedly to Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. I beg his forgiveness and that of my viewers and friends.”
Malaysian press Bernama reported that Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry has taken note of the apology made by Singapore’s Mediacorp and Najip, adding that that the Malaysian government viewed the offensive comments and insinuations made against the Malaysian leadership seriously.
