The police have arrested a 60-year-old man allegedly involved in a series of ‘Grab / Uber Promotional Packages’ scams, it informed in a press release on 28 March.
Police received several reports on 22 and 23 February 2017 from victims who have been introduced to cheap ‘Grab / Uber Promotional Packages’ through their friends, who came across these promotions by word of mouth.
The victims were then asked to contact the seller via Whatsapp, and were instructed to transfer money to bank accounts to purchase the packages. However, the victims were not able to redeem the rides after making payments and the seller also became uncontactable.
Upon receipt of the reports, officers from Bedok Division conducted extensive investigations to establish the identity of the suspect and arrested him on 24 March 2017.
Investigations are ongoing, the police said.
Anyone found guilty with the offence of cheating may be punished with imprisonment for a term of up to 10 years, and shall also be liable to a fine.
The police advise members of the public to purchase rides only from official sources and to always exercise caution when purchasing items at prices that sounds too good. When in doubt, call the anti-scam helpline at 1800-722 6688 or visit www.scamalert.sg, police also advised.
