Now that you’re content and not crying, let us talk about baby. You might be feeling like it’s time to get prepared; don’t worry, I’ve gone ahead and compiled a list of all your baby must haves so you can shop from the couch while you eat ice cream from a bowl resting on your belly.
Don’t forget, newborns only do three things: They love to sleep, eat and make a mess in their diapers. All you have to do is make sure that these three things happen without causing either you or baby too much stress and you’re set.
First, you’re going to want an ergonomic carrier. Lots of parents think they should automatically buy a stroller, but let me save you the bother – a carrier is just so much better and easier in hot and crowded Singapore. Not only will it keep baby comfortable and well-comforted, it makes taking a bus or train so much easier. Plus, it makes it really easy for baby to take a nap on you, while keeping your hands free!
If baby isn’t sleeping on you, then you might need a crib or a bassinette to pop them into (if you’re not co-sleeping). Bassinets can be super handy as a portable sleeping space (think naptime at grandma’s house) or for keeping baby near you at night. A crib is a much larger investment, but well-designed cribs can be turned into a toddler bed once your child gets a little older. Just skip the bumper pads, as experts no longer recommend using them.
Next, you’re going to need a diaper bag. Well, you could just use a giant tote bag like my sister did, but a proper diaper bag is just so much more convenient, what with all those little compartments to hold everything in its place. Trust me, you don’t want to be fumbling for wipes when you’re out shopping and your baby is covered in poo.
Speaking of poo, you’re also going to need diapers and a very large stock of wipes. If you’re using disposable diapers, stock up as newborns may need many as 10 changes a day. Or consider going green and using cloth diapers – they’ve have come a long way. Modern versions don’t require folding or fumbling with pins, plus they’re adjustable and fit your baby from birth to potty training.
Last but not least, you need to figure out what baby is going to eat. If you plan on returning to work, a breast pump can help you maintain that precious breastfeeding relationship with your child. Get a double electric one if you plan on exclusively pumping, and don’t forget to get storage bags and bottles as well so your caregiver can feed baby when you’re out. If you are planning to use formula, or if the circumstances require it, make sure you stock up before baby is set to arrive.
