In an interview with the Straits Times in January  2016, the Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Sports Hub, Mr Manu Sawhney said that he was aiming to bring Manchester United to play in Singapore at the National Stadium.
He told the Straits Times during the hour-long interview that “I hosted United’s commercial director (Jamie Reigle) at our facility and he was blown away by the place – I told him that it is my absolute dream to bring the Red Devils to Singapore.”
He went on to say that “We want to bring the team to Asia more often. Sitting on the board of directors, I am encouraging them to do that.  There is a clear intent to do just that and put the Sports Hub on the global map.”
Mr Sawhney sits on the Board of Manchester United as an independent director.
However, more than a year after he made the comments, it seems that all has been conveniently forgotten.
Till today, there have been no indication that the Singapore Sports Hub is keeping to its word about the visit of the Red Devils.
It was in August 2015 that the Singapore Sports Hub played hosts to the Barclays Asia trophy which involved English sides Arsenal, Stoke City and Everton. The CEO of the Sports Hub was then Frenchman Philippe Colin Delavaud.
With the HSBC World Rugby 7s due to take place again at the National Stadium in April, and with an announcement imminent about Singapore hosting the International Champions Cup at the National Stadium, it is hoped that Mr Sawhney and the Singapore Sports Hub provide an update on Manchester United’s supposed visit.
And with the Sports Hub’s suite owners already kicking up a din over the lack of events at the National Stadium, it is only timely that the Sports Hub keeps to its word and thrill all Manchester United fans in Singapore.
