THE: NUS world's fourth most international university

The National University of Singapore (NUS) has been named the world’s fourth most international university by Times Higher Education (THE) on Wednesday (1 Feb).
It ranked fourth on a list of 150 international universities, ahead of universities like Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard, behind  University of Hong Kong – which ranked third. Taking first and second place were Swiss university ETH Zurich and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
The ranking takes into account the number of journal publications with at least one international co‐author; proportion of international students, proportion of international staff; and international reputation.
The university’s international reputation, which weights 25 percent of the total score, was also included for the first time in the tabulation of the rankings this year. It measures the ratio of international votes to domestic votes through an invitation-only survey, which asks leading scholars to name the world’s best universities for teaching and research in their field.
NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said: “We are pleased to be placed fourth in the world in the THE’s ranking of The World’s Most International Universities 2017. This is a strong recognition of our global approach to education and research with a focus on Asian perspectives and expertise, as well as the active role we play in international academic and research networks.”
About eight in 10 NUS undergraduates have a significant study abroad experience, including participating in semester-long student exchange programs in more than 300 partner universities in over 40 countries.
Prof Tan said, “As the majority of our students are Singaporeans, they benefit greatly from the unique diversity of learning opportunities that NUS can provide as one of the most international universities in the world.”
NUS students enjoy both Asian and global educational experiences that broaden their outlook and increase their networks, while enabling them to access some of the best academic programs around the world.
“In short, to enhance learning outcomes, we bring our students to the world, and we bring a world of learning to our students in Singapore. This is very important for Singapore as we are a small country with extensive trading ties around the globe and home to many companies with multinational operations,” said Prof Tan.
Prof Tan also shared that NUS welcomes high-quality faculty and students from Asia and around the world as they bring valuable academic expertise as well as different social and cultural perspectives.
“We now have a diverse and talented community on campus, comprising staff and students from about 100 countries. They add much to the vibrancy of our campus and to the energising environment, which promotes innovation and offers expanded opportunities for members of the NUS community to excel and maximise their potential,” he said.
In research, NUS has built a global network of partnerships. Prof Tan explained, “Today, research is an international activity. It is very important for NUS researchers to collaborate extensively with top research groups from leading universities around the world as this further increases the quality and impact of their work.”
“It can also contribute to realising and raising the translational impact of our research, for the benefit of economic and societal advancement in Singapore and beyond,” he said.
