Rain has been falling extensively in the country throughout the last three days since Monday, resulting in the raise of the water level at the Linggiu Reservoir in Johor which is operated by Singapore’s national water agency PUB.
PUB has stated that the reservoir is now 30.8 percent full, up from 27.5 percent a week ago. This marked improvement from the historic low of 20 percent, which was recorded in October 2016.
There has always been a great concern in the country regarding the water levels of the reservoir, as it regulates the flow of the Johor River. This river is where the country extracts raw water for treatment and water usage.
There were several occasions of flash flood as the rain pouring down heavily. One of the biggest, took place at Tanjong Pagar.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) informed that the showers are due to a Northeast Monsoon surge that is currently affecting Singapore. The monsoon surge refers to a strengthening of winds over the South China Sea, causing extensive rain clouds to form over our surrounding region.
As Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said in a written Parliamentary response in the beginning of this month, there is a “significant risk” that the reservoir may run out of water this year if 2017 turns out to be a dry year. He noted that it would pose severe problems for Singapore and Malaysia if it happens.
And PUB spokesman said, “While the water level has increased due to the rains in the last two days, weather uncertainties remain. We all need to continue our efforts to use water wisely and conserve our precious water resources.”
