Based on seven hours minimum of sleep per day, 44 percent of Singaporeans does not have enough sleep on weekdays, said a study from SingHealth Polyclinics (SHP) which it had published recently.
The SHP conducted the study by gathering data from adult Singaporeans who visited two polyclinics in 2015, covering several ethnic groups from 21 to 80 years old.
The study found out:

  • Inadequate sleep is associated directly with home environments, status of employment, consumption patterns and the use of digital devices.
  • People who has insufficient sleep usually involved with activities such as:
    1. studying,
    2. surving the internet,
    3. playing computer games,
    4. drinking caffeinated liquids about two hours before sleep,
    5. sharing the bedroom with the children, and
    6. reading.
  • People who leisurely read on their bed are twice more likely to have insufficient sleep compared to those who don’t.
  • Working adults and students had more inadequate sleep on weekdays compared to the unemployed, homemakers and retirees.
  • Shift workers nearly to two times more likely to have not enough sleep on weekends, compared to those working office hours.
  • Comparing in different ethnic groups, about 60 percent of Chinese had sufficient sleep while the number is 40 percent for Malays and Indians.

The report stated sleep insufficiency could put a person at risk of cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental diseases.
