The Temporary Market at Jurong West Street 41 was officially opened on Sunday (1 January) by DPM Tharman accompanied by SMS Desmond and MP of Jurong GRC Ang Wei Neng.
The original market was burnt down after the massive fire which happened on 11 October.
At the same time, Mr Ang also announced that the Housing and Development Board (HDB) would be building a two storey complex to replace the burnt market, which will be located on the site of the previous wet market at Blk 493, at a cost of $6.2m, fully funded by the government.
Mr Ang said during his speech that the first floor of the new complex, will be about the same size as the previous wet market and eating house. While, the second storey will have social communal facilities such as a senior care centre.
“The new 2-storey complex will be a symbol of collaboration between residents, stallholders and the government. The new 2-storey complex will be a symbol of turning adversity into opportunity,” he ended.
Due to the raging fire, the roof of the wet market collapsed and the exterior side wall of a coffee shop at Block 494, which was directly facing the blaze, sustained heavy fire damage. The building had to be torn down as it was impossible to fix the damages.
