A district court on (30 Dec) sentenced a man who had stolen his mother’s ATM card and withdrew a total of $21,776 over five months with imprisonment for five months. His sentence was backdated to Nov 8.

Mohamed Nasir Salim (57), pleaded guilty to 10 out of 48 charges, including stealing his mother’s POSB ATM card at the Woodlands flat in August 2015.

The Straits Times reported the court heard that Mdm Maznah (83) had lost her ATM card in August 2015 and when at a later date she checked her POSB account she noticed that there were several nets transactions and some cash withdrawals made from her savings account.

She has suspected that her son might had taken it so she did not make any report until 27 April this year.

Upon her report the police arrested Nasir and he admitted that he had stolen his mother’s POSB ATM card from the flat.

Nasir had obtained the card’s personal identification number from his mother previously, he then used the card for internet transactions and withdrew several times from unknown locations.

Nasir, who worked as a cleaner, has been previously convicted for motor vehicle theft and drug possession and consumption.

For knowingly withdrawing money from the complainant’s bank account he could have been fined up to $5,000 and/or jailed for up to two years per charge. And he could have been jailed up to seven years and fined for the theft.
