A man was arrested in suspicion of activities in loan-sharking, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) informed on Tuesday (20 Dec) in a press release.

SPF said, the arrest was a result of  police investigation in response to a report made on 6 Dec.

The report has informed SPF that a suspicious man had locked the main gate of a residential HDB unit in Bedok South with a bicycle lock, and a graffiti related to loan shark was scribbled on the wall outside the residential unit.

SPF informed that police officers from the Bedok Division, after conducting extensive ground enquiries and using aid of images obtained from utilizing the Police Cameras, were able to track down and arrest the suspect along Boon Lay Avenue on Monday.

The man is believed to be involved in several loan shark harassment cases island wide, SPF preliminary investigations revealed.

The suspect will be charged in court on Wednesday under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition).

Under the act, first-time offenders found guilty of committing loan shark harassment will be punished with imprisonment for a term up to five years, and a fine of not less than S$5,000 but not more than S$50,000. He/she will also be liable to be punished with not less than three strokes of the cane.
