A 23-year-old Malaysian, Ahmad Muin Yaacob, was charged on Wednesday (21 December) with the murder of a woman found dead at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal on 24 November between 9am and 1pm.
The woman was later identified as Ahmad’s colleague, a cleaning supervisor, Madam Maimunah Awang.
Her body was found by another cleaning supervisor in 2m-deep drain near her rest area with injuries on her neck and stomach, a gold bracelet and necklace she was used to been seen wearing, were missing when she was found out.
SPF said the suspect was arrested in Malaysia with the help of Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) on 18 December following a warrant of arrest issued by the State Courts. He was handed over to Singapore authorities on Monday evening.
Ahmed was brought to court on Wednesday morning in an unmarked police car. He was flanked by two plainclothes officers in the backseat.
The man was reported to have shown no emotion as the murder charge was read out to him. However, he asked the judge, “Can I be saved from the death sentence if I cooperate with the authorities?”
Ahmed will be held in remand for a week for investigations.
He will next appear in court on 28 December.
If convicted of murder, he faces the death penalty.
