A man who had pushed a policewoman’s head to the ground and kicked her as she laid on the floor, was sentenced to 10 weeks’ jail after he pleaded guilty to one charge of causing hurt to a public servant in the discharge of her duty.
It was heard at the district court that Lim (25) and two friends on 2 May 2016 had taken a taxi at Marina Square just after midnight.
They had told the taxi driver, Chan Foo Chuen, to head towards Teban Gardens and Pioneer Road.
But the group had not been able to decide who should had been dropped first and where exactly the taxi driver should had gone, resulting in Chan to stop his taxi near a bus stop at Penjuru Road.
At that time, Lim had turned hostile and the driver then had called the police.
Two officers promptly had arrived at 1.45am, and Corporal Ammy Shazwina Rizuan Ong (27) then spoke to Lim while her partner spoke to his friends.
Corporal Ong asked Lim for his identification and told him to calm down but when she turned her back on him, Lim grabbed her head and neck, and pushed her head to the ground.
The left side of the officer’s head hit the ground and while she tried to protect her firearm and other equipment with her hands, Lim kicked her lower back once, and then walked away.
The policewoman stood up and took a few steps towards him to prevent him from leaving, but she then fainted and collapsed to the ground.
Her partner followed Lim for a distance, and Lim said to the officer, “You police right? Come fight lah.”
Lim continued walking towards Jurong Town Hall Road and the officer went back to his partner and called for help.
Corporal Ong regained consciousness when the paramedics arrived. She was taken to a hospital, and after observation a few hours later, she was discharged with three days of medical leave.
Not long after, Lim was arrested near Teban Gardens by other officers.
He could have been jailed for up to seven years, fined, caned, or get any combined punishment for his conduct.
