A lift in Boon Lay Housing Board block plunged unexpectedly last Tuesday (15 November) from the third floor to the ground floor then went back to the second floor, causing a 65-year-old woman to hurt her leg, according to the Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao.

The lift, which located at Block 207, Boon Lay Place, is closed at the moment.

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said that it was alerted to an incident at the lift on Friday (18 November). To investigate the case, BCA’s engineers, representatives from West Coast Town Council and the lift contractor went to the site.

BCA spokesman said, “Based on BCA’s investigations, there was an electronic fault that caused the lift to initiate a safety stop between the second and first storey until the lift re-levelled at the second storey.”

West Coast Town Council has been instructed to work with its lift contractor to do the necessary checks and rectifications to ensure that the issue is resolved.

Mr Patrick Tay, the Member of Parliament for the area, said after visiting the resident’s house last Thursday (17 November), “In addition to current supervision, audits and checks of lifts in the constituency, I have requested the West Coast Town Council to conduct an additional round of checks of similar lifts across the constituency as a precautionary measure.”
Incidents of lift malfunctions are on the rise in Singapore, causing slight injuries to death. Just recently on 10 November, part of a lift’s ceiling at Block 480, Pasir Ris Drive 4, fell and hit Mr Yazid, his 63-year-old father and his two-year-old son when they were in the lift on their way back home.
