Seletar Airport is set to have a new Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) built by end of 2018 that can handle up to 2,000 passengers per day.
A tender for the construction of the new PTB has been called yesterday (19 Oct) and construction is expected to begin in October this year.
At the groundbreaking for the PTB on Thursday (20 Oct), Changi Airport Group said that the total capacity is more than 26 times the number of passengers that the airport handled in 2015. The new facilitiy is budgeted at S$50 million.
When the new PTB opens, operations at the current PTB located on the western side of Seletar Airport will cease. The current terminal will be torn down, as part of the renewal of Seletar Airport, which has started from 2018.
Current achievement of the renewal program of Seletar Airport includes:
- The lengthening of its runway,
- Additional taxiways,
- Upgraded aircraft parking aprons,
- The construction of a new control tower and fire station,
- And a doubling of the number of parking stands.
The upgrade also aims to make the Seletar Airport as a center for private jets.
This is to support Singapore which has been established as a major hub for commercial carriers.
With the growing demand for air travel and increased traffic at Changi Airport, so is the need to ensure the optimisation of the use of resources within the entire aviation system in Singapore.
When the new PTB at Seletar Airport is ready, the turboprop aircraft operations also will be shifted from Changi Airport to Seletar Airport. The shift will help to free up capacity for jet aircraft operations at Changi Airport.
Changi Airport Group explains that to handle scheduled commercial flights, the departure area will have:
- Four check-in counters,
- Four immigration counters,
- Two security screening stations, and
- A gate dataining room which can seat close to 200 passengers.
The airport will also have a private drop-off and a dedicated check-in areas for passengers traveling on chartered business jets and private jets, where they will be able to have quick predeparture clearance in a private and exclusive setting.
Passengers will be able to board their flights conveniently through three aircraft parking stands adjacent to the terminal. This will be supplemented by other aircraft parking stands located at the rest of the airport, Changi Airport Group said.
Mr See Seng Wan, general manager of Seletar Airport, said: “We have made good progress with the redevelopment of Seletar Airport in recent years. Today’s groundbreaking for the new terminal is another milestone in our plans for the airport. We look forward to providing passengers with a new level of experience, in terms of comfort and convenience, when the terminal opens.”
Mr Daniel Ng, director (aviation industry) at the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), said: “The expansion of Seletar Airport will accommodate the growth of our air traffic and optimise operational resources. The new passenger terminal building will also complement operations at Changi Airport and allow for more capacity.”
The new terminal will be located at the eastern side of Seletar Airport, and will have a gross floor area of 9,500 sq m, of which 500 sq m will be committed to serving business aviation passengers.
