Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) posted on its Facebook account an apology to passengers who have to detrain from Tanjong Pagar MRT westbound train due to a leak freon gas from the train’s air-conditioning system on 15 August at 2.53 pm.

The platform screen doors were opened for passengers to exit the train which caused the discharge of freon into the tunnel reduced the visibility at parts of the station. SMRT staff switched on the tunnel ventilation system immediately to disperse the odourless gas.

The train was withdrawn from passenger service to allow the air-conditioning system to be checked.

“The passenger platform at Tanjong Pagar MRT station remained in service during this incident, and train services were not affected,” it said.

One of the Facebook user, Gavin Koh, wrote, “A minor Freon leak may not pose a health risk, but exposure to high amounts can cause harmful side effects, such as headaches, dizziness, heart palpitations, and irritation of the lungs, skin or eyes.”

One of the passenger, Keline Heng, posted a short video of the platform when the gas leaked.

Govin Raj also posted on his Twitter account the video of the smoke.
