RIO DE JANEIRO – National paddler Yu Mengyu succeeded in her third round women’s single game at the Rio Olympic Games, winning on Monday morning (8 August) in straight sets.

She defeated Australia’s Lay Jian Fang to advance to the fourth round.
The world No 17 player made light work of her lower ranked opponent (128) as she cruised to a 11-9, 11-9, and 11-6, 12-10 victory in the contest.

Yu said after her game that the light in the hall was a little bright but then she got used to it.

“I prepared myself well mentally and physically but tomorrow’s opponent will be tougher so I need to prepare for that.”

Earlier on the men’s singles competition, Singapore’s Gao Ning crashed out in the second round after losing 4-3 to Britain’s Paul Drinkhall.

In swimming, Singapore swimmer Quah Zheng Wen’s 100m backstroke event at Rio 2016 is over, after he finished 22nd out of 39 in the heats.

The 19-year-old clocked a time of 54.38 seconds, more than three-tenths slower than his personal best of 54.03. The fastest qualifier was Frenchman Camille Lacourt in 52.96.

Quah will now turn his attention to his other two events at the Games, the 100m and 200m butterfly.

And Singapore shooter Teo Shun Xie misses out on the 10m air pistol final after finishing 37th out of 44 competitors at Rio 2016.
