More than 6,000 National University of Singapore (NUS) students went out to the streets yesterday, in this year’s National University of Singapore’s Student Union (NUSSU) Flag Day.

As participation in the institution’s annual efforts to raise funds for charity they started their day early in the morning, joined by their President and Provost.

Earlier this week, after the announcement that all student-organised freshman activities would be suspended after reports of inappropriate behaviour at orientation camps, NUS president Tan Chorh Chuan encouraged the university community and the public to strongly support NUSSU’s fund-raising efforts.

Their aim for this year’s Flag Day, organised by the NUSSU is to raise at least $470,000 for the 23 beneficiaries. Last year’s edition raised more than $459,000.

The institution’s annual efforts to raise funds to raise funds for 23 beneficiaries is supported by Community Chest Singapore.

Community Chest raises funds on a yearly basis to meet the needs of the social service programmes they help support.

These programmes objectives are:

  • Nurture children and youths-at-risk to succeed
  • Dignify the lives of the elderly
  • Keep families together
  • People with disabilities lead independent lives
