930 g of heroin was seized by Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint on 7 May at around 11.45 am. The heroin is estimated to be worth more than S$65,000.
The heroin was found in two bundles behind the glove compartment in a Malaysia-registered car driven by a 24-year-old male Malaysian.
The car had arrived at the Woodlands Checkpoint and was stopped for checks by ICA officers. During the inspection, the two bundles of heroin were uncovered, after which the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) was immediately informed.
The ICA and CNB said in a joint statement that after conducting follow-up investigations, two other suspects were arrested, both of whom are 30-year-old male Malaysians.
All three suspects are currently being investigated for drug trafficking.
The ICA and CNB stated that the Home Team agencies will continue to conduct checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent the smuggling in of not only drugs, but undesirable persons, weapons, explosives and other contrabands as well.
The Misuse of Drugs Act provides for the death penalty if the amount of pure heroin trafficked exceeds 15 g.
