The People’s Action Party (PAP) has named long-time grassroots leader and lawyer, Mr K. Muralidharan Pillai as its candidate for the Bukit Batok Single Member Constituency (SMC) by-election in a press conference on Monday.
Mr Murali is the head of commercial litigation at Rajah and Tann. Before embarking on a legal career, he was Assistant Superintendent in the Singapore Police Force.
Mr Murali, a long-time PAP activist, who contested in Aljunied GRC in the last General Election (GE) and was part of the PAP team that lost narrowly, garnering 49% of total votes. Mr Murali also defeated the incumbent MP, Mr Chen Show Mao of the Workers’ Party in his Paya Lebar ward. He used to serve in Bukit Batok as the PAP branch secretary before he was transferred to Aljunied GRC.
Mr Murali has a strong connection with the PA grassroots in Bukit Batok since he served there for 15 years, participated in many activities and helmed many committees. (CV of Mr K. Muralidharan Pillai)
With the bulk of opposition parties declaring that they would not contest in the Bukit Batok SMC by-election. Singapore Democratic Party’s Secretary General, Dr Chee Soon Juan would likely face Mr Murali in a straight fight in the polls.
The single-member seat was declared vacant after former People’s Action Party Member of Parliament, Mr David Ong resigned from his position as MP and the PAP on 12 March, citing “personal indiscretion” in his letter of resignation.
Mr Ong entered Parliament in 2011, representing the Bukit Batok ward when it was under the Jurong GRC. It was carved out as a single-seat ward in 2015.
