With the bulk of opposition parties declaring that they would not contest in the Bukit Batok SMC by-election. Singapore Democratic Party's Secretary General, Dr Chee Soon Juan would likely face Mr Murali in a straight fight in the polls.
The single-member seat was declared vacant after former People’s Action Party Member of Parliament, Mr David Ong resigned from his position as MP and the PAP on 12 March, citing “personal indiscretion” in his letter of resignation.
Mr Ong entered Parliament in 2011, representing the Bukit Batok ward when it was under the Jurong GRC. It was carved out as a single-seat ward in 2015.
