Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew announced earlier today that Phase 2 of the Downtown Line will be opened on December 27.
Phase 2 of the Downtown Line will introduce 12 new stations to the Downtown Line that connect commuters from Bukit Panjang to Rocher.
“With this, we would have added 40 new stations or grown our rail network by 34 per cent. Six in 10 households will be within a 10-minute walk to a station.”
Mr Lui also announced that when the line is open, commuters will be able to travel for free on” the Downtown line for a limited period of time.
However, it is was not revealed whether SBS Ltd, which operates the Downtown Line, or the Land Transport Authority (LTA), will bear the costs of the free rides.
“When opened, rides will be free on DTL1 and DTL2 for a short period of time to encourage commuters to try out the new line and familiarise themselves with the stations.
I encourage residents from Bukit Panjang and Bukit Timah to take the trains to the city to enjoy the festive lights, do some post-Christmas shopping or attend the New Year Countdown.”
On December 27, the reduction of public transport fares by 1.9% would also kick in to coincide with the opening of Phase 2.
The Downtown Line is expected to be fully completed in December 2017 with the completion of Phase 3.
